Let’s Get a Better Understanding of Using Medical Marijuana

Despite advances in medicine, there are a large number of medical conditions that cannot be treated and this adversely affects the quality of the life of patients and their families. The patients in Louisiana having these health problems spend a large amount of money on medical treatment, yet the ailment persists. Research indicates that medical marijuana can be used for effectively treating a large number of debilitating health conditions. Patients who wish to utilize medical marijuana frequently seek additional information in order to make an informed decision.

Marijuana that is used for medical reasons has cannabidiol in it. This will help the body’s endocannabinoid system, and it can help with a lot of different medical conditions. It is widely used for pain relief, especially for patients suffering from cancer and similar health problems. It is also very effective in reducing inflammation and treating anxiety disorders, stress, and insomnia. The major benefit of medical marijuana is that it often does not have side effects and provides quick relief.

In Louisiana the Therapeutic Marijuana Act regulates the production and supply of medical marijuana, it cannot be used for other purposes. Only licensed facilities can grow, produce and dispense medical marijuana. At present only the Agricultural Centers of Louisiana State University and Southern University can grow medical marijuana. Though there has been a major increase in the number of users of medical marijuana, there are only two licensed facilities for the production of medical marijuana. The users can purchase the medical marijuana they require from the nine licensed pharmacies in the state, with one pharmacy in each region of Louisiana. The state has a seed-to-sale tracking system in place to prevent misuse of the product.

Only patients with a recommendation from a doctor can purchase medical marijuana from a dispensary. The doctor will prescribe medical marijuana for treating qualifying conditions that are considered debilitating to the patient. Some of the medical conditions include cancer, seizure disorders like epilepsy, neurogenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, motor neuron disease, dementia, spastic, severe or chronic pain, muscle spams, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), autism, brain injury or other conditions where hospice care is required. The list of qualifying conditions is revised repeatedly to include new conditions where medical marijuana may provide some relief.
